- Set up your printing defaults.
- Start > Printers and Faxes
- Right-click on the Savin and go to Printing Preferences
- If you already have an option in the viewing window that is black and white and double-sided, then select that and click "Apply"
- If you don't have an option for that, click Add/Change Custom Settings, create that option, save it, and then highlight that option and click "Apply" (note: if you want to rearrange the order of the printing options, click the button that looks like two pages with an arrow between them)
- Only print in color if you really need to.
- Don't be shy about printing in color if you've got a good reason, but be aware of your choice--don't have color be an accident.
- If you need your document in color, consider whether it needs to be printed or if emailing it will be just as effective.
- Print to a different printer.
- The printers that are not the Savin are cheaper to print to for small jobs. Print to the Brother printer (in the CPR room) every now and then, and you'll get some nice exercise walking back to get your document!
- If you are printing a document that is longer than a couple pages, use the Savin.
- Print smaller.
- If you're printing something for your own use, consider printing more than one page on a single sheet of paper. PDFs make it extremely easy to print two (or more) pages to a sheet, which, front-and-back, makes four pages to a page.
- If you're printing PowerPoint slides, try to do at least three, if not six, slides per sheet.
- Print only what you need.
- Clicking Print Preview before you click Print can save you from printing sheets with only one line on the top, or the additional pages you don't need. Check to make sure you and the printer are on the same page about how many sheets of paper your print job should take.
- Ever click Print, only to see another typo? Try using a Hold Print. In the Savin print properties window, under job type, select Hold Print, and then name the job whatever will ring a bell with you. Then click Print. When you go to the Savin, hit the print button, then "Print Jobs", and you'll see your job listed. You can print from there. Yes, it's an extra step, but if you realize after you've sent a job that you need to fix something and reprint, no ink and paper will have gone to waste.

Tech Yoda's Tip of the Week: Let's save some trees (and money), folks!
You may have heard that the poor Savin has seen an increased usage over the past few months--if you haven't, I'm here to tell you that we have printed 50% more color pages in the past month than we did in June. This isn't just expensive, it's REALLY expensive. Our black and white printing is up too, and we'd like to see those numbers drop. Here are some ways you can help!
