Here is an update from your Wellness Committee...we realize there is a lot of information here, but please read through because there is some good information here!
Organic Produce Delivery Update
The first delivery from Door to Door Organics will be on Thursday, June 23 and future deliveries will be made to CRHC every other Thursday. If you would like more information or want to join the group it’s not too late! Please contact Sara S.
Bike to Work Day - June 22, 2011
Thinking about riding your bike to work? Give it a try on Wednesday, June 22 for Bike to Work Day! Check out the official website http://www3.drcog.org/BikeToWork/ for resources, information, maps, and tips on safe bicycle riding. The building has locker rooms on the first floor that have showers and lockers (BYO lock) if you need to freshen up after your ride. Just use your key card for access. Don’t forget your helmet!
CPR/AED Training Update
We currently have 14 employees signed up to participate in the CPR/AED training on June 29. If you have not responded to the invitation, please let J$ know if you plan to attend or not. We must have an accurate count of employees participating, as we need to add a second class if we have more than 16 participants. J$ will send an e-mail to those of you who haven't responded to remind you to RSVP.
Financial Wellness - Budgeting 101 Class
To kick-off the Financial Wellness piece of our Wellness Program, our very own J$ will be providing a Budgeting 101 class on Wednesday, July 20. Off-site employees will have the opportunity to call in for the class and we will also record it and have it available for your future listening pleasure! Look for an Outlook invite very soon.
Beating those high gas prices
Has anybody noticed that gas prices are on the rise again? Here are some tips to help save money at the pump:
Try to find the lowest gas prices in town. There are several websites that help with this:
Check out the Federal Trade Commission's interactive site that offers some money saving tips
Here are some other money saving tips found on-line:
- Reduce weight in your car - reducing the mass of your car means you have to accelerate less, so remove any heavy items that you don't really need to carry around with you
- Avoid idling your car - idling results in lost gas, so if you are parked somewhere and don't plan to move for more than a minute, turn your car off. (Besides, idling releases toxins into the air, which is not good for your health anyway)
- Learn when to close your windows and when to open them - if you are traveling at lower speeds (and the weather allows), turn off the A/C and open your windows. However, if you are traveling at high speeds, open windows can create drag, reducing fuel efficiency (not to mention, can really mess up your hair), so roll up the windows and use the A/C at higher speeds
- Pick the best route - less miles is not always better, if you are sitting in heavy traffic and stopping at lots of lights. Try to find a route with less traffic and less stopping
- Inflate your tires to the specified level - this will reduce the contact area of the tire against the road and decrease friction
- Remove items from your roof - if you don't need a luggage rack on your roof, remove it to reduce drag
- Maintain your car - change the oil, change the air filters, etc to keep the engine running smoothly
- Park in the shade - a hot car evaporates gas, so park in the shade when possible
- Group errands - this is especially helpful if you need to go to several stores that are within walking distance from each other and you can park and walk
- Look for alternatives - public transportation, walking and biking are all great ways to get around
We hope you all got something positive out of today's update!
Sara S., Matt, Robyn, Cari and Jennifer J.
