Tech Yoda's Tip of the Week: Sometimes, Size Really Does Matter

When it comes to email, size matters.  In a big way.

1. How big is that attachment?  Our Outlook set up will not allow you to send or receive emails larger than 10MB.  If you are sending a bunch of attachments, do the math (1,000KB = 1MB), and make sure you leave yourself some wiggle room for the size of the email itself.
2. How big is that mailing list?  Emails that are going to 50 or more recipients should not be sent from Outlook--they should be sent from MailChimp.  Not sure how to go about getting your email into MailChimp and getting it sent?  Talk to Sarah (or your nearest Program Assistant).
3. How big is that photo?  High resolution photos are great, but they take up a lot of memory and can slow your email down significantly.  Try opening the photo in Microsoft Office Picture Manager and using the "compress" function to reduce its size before sending.
4. How full is your Outlook mailbox?  Moving emails from your inbox to other folders in the tree below it doesn't reduce the size of your mailbox.  Make it a New Years resolution to check your mailbox monthly, emptying your deleted items folder and getting rid of emails you no longer need (especially those with large attachments).  Or, plan to archive things you want to save but don't need to access often.
